Have you ever found yourself wondering how to make that first move to reach out to a professional connection that you would like to get to know without seeming like you are inviting them on a date or trying to sell them something? I know I have.

Some people are born networkers, for others it doesn’t come quite as naturally, but the benefits of making new connections can be well worth stepping outside of your comfort zone. Seeking out like-minded professionals to network with can help you share knowledge, bounce ideas, learn from others mistakes and successes and enhance your own reputation and credibility. Networking is all about the ‘win-win’, building professional relationships for mutual gain. Sure, it can put you in the right place at the right time for business opportunities but it isn’t all about the instant gratification. Networking should be constant, keeping in touch with your contacts, nurturing professional relationships and expanding your circle by introducing your connections to other liked minded people.

But how do you even get started? Here are a few ways to dip your toe into the networking scene here in Cayman:

  • The Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce holds a number of “Speed Networking” lunches as well as professional development and social events to help you mix and mingle with the local business community.
  • Join a professional organization. For marketers, the Cayman Islands Marketing Professionals Association (CIMPA) offer monthly networking events as well as quarterly training sessions and socials where you will have the opportunity to network with like-minded people in the industry.
  • Join a community service club or non-profit organisation. This is a great opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and expand your networks whilst giving back to the community.
  • Take up a hobby. Joining a sports team, book group, wine club, or whatever your preference, is a great way to meet and connect with like-minded people that share your passions.
  • Utilize social media. Social media allows us to discover, connect, and engage with new people of interest. LinkedIn was made for this and has many tools to help you make new business connections but sending a tweet or message on Facebook or Instagram can be just as effective. Do your research so that you can use a personal approach and mention your common interests or a project they have worked on when reaching out to capture their attention.

Be brave, set yourself goals and make a conscious effort to reach out to a new connection or attend a networking event each month. You’ll be surprised how quickly your professional network can grow.
