A few weeks ago we launched our latest project – the Spirit of Sports Awards. We are really excited about this initiative as it brings together so much we are passionate about: sporting excellence, sportsmanship and community.

Tower has a long history of supporting sports in the Cayman Islands. We have sponsored many events and organisations – Pilates for Pink, Purple Dragon, Off The Beaten Track, Mercuryman, the Cayman Islands Triathlon, Academy Football Club, Cayman Airways Youth Cup and just recently, the Inter-secondary schools track and field meet. As individuals we participate in many of Cayman’s great sporting events and strive to keep ourselves fit and active. Call by the office and you may find us on the carpet doing our daily 1 minute plank!

Sports is important to us because we believe in the benefits it brings to society – and in a small community like ours the benefits are magnified.  Children who play sport are less likely to use drugs and smoke, they tend to perform better academically in school, have lower school dropout rates and a better chance of getting into college.  Sports play an important role in imparting character values in children and adults alike. Sports can help teach honesty, teamwork, fair play, rule following and citizenship. It can demonstrate the importance of hard work and determination. It encourages humanity.

Nothing quite stirs the soul, lights the fire and unifies people like sports (as a music lover, I add music to the list, but perhaps that can be the next project ;-)).

You only need to look to the Olympic games or any of the World Cups to see how it captures the attention and imagination of even the most sports-apathetic people.

Sport transcends sport. It reminds us of what it takes to truly live well – discipline, dedication to a goal, the quest for excellence, risk, and growth. It taps into that part of our psyche where we long to be at the top of our game, working to be all that we possibly can be, in whatever area of our life.  It is best expressed by Pierre de Coubertin, whose initiative helped to create the modern Olympic Games, and who said – the important thing is not to win, but to take part.

So watch this space as we grow and develop our Spirit of Sports brand. We have many ideas and initiatives that we intend launch to help bring out the best of our island community. Sign-up here to find out more.

In the meantime, follow these ‘sports’ rules and apply them to all areas of your life:

  • Play fair
  • Be a team player
  • Stay positive
  • Let your performance speak for itself
  • Lose gracefully
  • Win with class
  • Respect the rules

And never ever give up!
