Fun at Work day. It’s a thing. Who knew?! It may seem like an oxymoron to some, but work can be fun. Really. And it should be. After all, we spend about 50% of our total waking hours at work.
Having fun at work is so important at Tower that it is actually one of our company’s values:
- We make it fun. Happy people produce great work. Great work produces happy clients.
And fun is also at the foundation of another two of our values:
- Creativity is our passion. We love what we do, and it shows.
- We are a team.
Studies have shown that companies that adopt a fun-orientated culture have:
- Lower levels of absenteeism
- Greater job satisfaction
- Less down time
- Increased employee loyalty
Obviously, the office isn’t supposed to be an eight-hour long play date – it is a business after all. But fun can be productive and profitable. Happy people are more likely to work harder and stay longer. A good attitude increases oxygen, endorphins, and blood flow to the brain, which means you can think more clearly and be more creative. Humour also levels the playing field in the workplace – people can share a joke no matter what role they hold in the organisation – creating an atmosphere that encourages honest, open communication, and increased risk-taking. Laughter creates a bond bringing people together and building a sense of team spirit. Laughter makes people more accessible and encourages workplace collaboration. A fun workplace attracts great people. In our experience having a fun culture helps us attract clients that have a good fit with us.
Today we celebrated our team with a pot luck lunch, a group play list of our favourite tunes and cupcakes with sprinkles. There were lots of laughs and good feels. My work family kicks ass at playing hard and working even harder.
So in honour of Fun at Work Day, share a laugh with a colleague, because as Charlie Chaplin so eloquently put it – a day without laughter is a day wasted.
