Flip flops, dark shades and tons of sunblock are a sure sign of the summer season. But while some of us were thinking about the music festivals, travelling and lounging on beaches, others like myself were scrambling to secure a summer job, to enhance our knowledge of the working world and get some extra cash before heading back to school.

This year was a bit more special for me, not only was I able to work with one of the leading marketing communications firms in Cayman, but a work colleague from my previous summer job recommended me to Tower. This was validation of my strong work ethic and the lasting impression I had made on someone who remembered me a year later.

My first day in the office, I was greeted by a lovely group of ladies who are passionate about the work they do and understand the importance of having a balanced life. The “work hard, play hard” mind set is instilled in this office environment, an hour into my first day and I was taking part in a 10am planking session to get the muscles warmed up and the creative juices flowing.

Being an intern can sometimes seem like a daunting role. You are working with very experienced professionals and sometimes it might seem hard to understand where you fit in. However, it is these elements that encouraged me to adjust and become a part of the rhythm of the office. I applied myself to every task, asked a bunch of questions and the feedback I got was invaluable to say the least.

Working with Tower was quite different in the sense that I saw my ideas materialize into something that I could feel really proud about. I saw how my work was used in creating a final product presented to the client. This was a real learning experience for me as I developed a greater understanding of the various facets of marketing and was able to identify those areas that interested me, and those that didn’t.

As my summer dwindles to an end, I can’t help but feel nostalgic as I think about leaving Tower. Being a part of a great team of people and learning so many things has helped me to develop my personal and professional life. These are the finer details that high school or university does not prepare you for, and I would encourage young people to get started on their professional career at a young age as it really helps to put things into perspective as you grow older. Moreover, our little island has so many opportunities to offer and the right attitude can take you far.
