Health City Cayman Islands is delighted to announce the hiring of its first Caymanian doctor, Dr Irka Ebanks, marking a milestone for the hospital.
Dr Ebanks studies consisted of four years at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica followed by one year at the University of the West Indies School of Clinical Medicine and Research in Nassau, Bahamas. Prior to her completion in 2013, she undertook her internship in Jamaica, at the Kingston Public Hospital, the Victoria Jubilee Hospital for Women and the Bustamante Hospital for Children. As part of her internship, Dr. Ebanks worked in the Kingston region of Jamaica with a three month rotation in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, General Surgery and Paediatrics at these hospitals.
Dr Ebanks said she was thrilled to be practicing medicine at Health City Cayman Islands.
“Health City offers its patients an extremely high caliber of care that is all-encompassing, which follows my philosophy that the body and soul should be treated in unison,” she said, “I am really delighted to be a part of the team at Health City. It is wonderful to be back in the Cayman Islands and practice medicine to such a high degree.”
Dr Chandy Abraham, Medical and Facility Director at Health City said Dr Ebanks will enjoy varied responsibilities in her new post.
“Dr Ebanks is currently the Senior House Officer in the Cardiology Department,” he said. “In the coming year Dr Ebanks will be rotating throughout other departments, in order to broaden her knowledge base and become familiar with each area of our practice. Dr Ebanks is a wonderful complement to our existing medical team.”
Dr Chandy said he was proud and pleased that Health City had employed its first Caymanian doctor.
“We understand the importance of creating a new industry of opportunity in the tertiary healthcare field so that those Caymanians that desire to make their mark within the exciting specialties that we offer can aspire and follow their dreams and through hard work and determination make them a reality. To this end we intend in the future to open a medical university which will embrace young Caymanians eager to follow in Dr Ebanks’ footsteps. In this way we can ensure many more Caymanian specialist doctors are employed in the future,” he said.
