Calling all runners! The Cayman Islands Cadet Corps is holding its second annual 5K fun run/walk next Sunday, 11th May and is looking for support from the community to make it a really successful event. And as it’s Mother’s Day this Sunday why not bring your mum along for a healthy and fun activity you can do together?
If you haven’t yet registered (you can pre-register at www.caymanactive.com/cadet) you can do so on the morning from 5.30 am. The race kicks off at 7 am at the John Gray High School Field and presentations for the winners and a raffle at 8.15 am. Youngsters under 10 have their own race that begins at 8 am and everyone is encouraged to come out and have some fun either participating or cheering on the participants – and their mothers!
A team race also allows for three runners per team with individual positions for team scores. Styled in the Cross Country club format, each runner completes the course and the lowest team score will win the team prize (unlike a relay race whereby each team member only completes part of the course).
Representing great value, the registration fee for adults is just CI$15 and just CI$5 for juniors 16 or under. Children participating in the under 10 race do so for free. All proceeds go to benefit the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps — an important youth organisation for young men and women between the ages of 12 and 17. The programme is designed to teach a broad range of values to the young people, including the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline.
The route starts and finishes at the paved tarmac track along the John Gray High School Field, beginning at the three-way junction at the Field of Dreams and Sports Complex. Participants then head west to Walkers Road via Academy Way, left unto Denham Thompson Way then right unto South Church Street then return via Walkers Rd and Memorial Ave and Academy Way.
BDO Cayman is the main sponsor of the event for the second year in a row. The Patron of the race is the Deputy Governor Hon Franz Manderson.
BDO Director Russell Smith says: “The Cayman Islands Cadet Corp is an excellent programme for young people and we are delighted to be able to support them in this way. We hope that everyone will come out this Mother’s Day and enjoy participating in this worthwhile event.”
In addition to BDO Cayman, the event endorsed by the Cayman Islands Athletic Association, has gained the support of Race Caribbean Event Management, and organisers are seeking additional funds from the local business community.
