The Generali Worldwide Mercuryman, Cayman’s only half iron distance triathlon, will celebrate its 5th anniversary on 22 January 2017, a significant milestone that reflects the triathlon’s popularity with both Cayman residents and international pro triathletes.

Mr Trevor Murphy, Mercuryman Race Director, said the organising committee were truly grateful for the support the race has received from the Cayman community, particularly those in the Eastern districts, as well as those from Cayman’s triathlon community.

“It may sound like a cliché, but we really could not have organised a race of these proportions without the support of so many people. From the local community and businesses in the Eastern districts, our ongoing sponsors, to Cayman’s triathletes and the international pro-triathlete community who have come down to race every year, we say thank you,” he said.

Mercuryman has marked the 5th anniversary occasion by adding, for the first time, an international distance event, a half iron distance duathlon and a children’s event.

“One of our visions for the race has always been to grow the sport of triathlon in Cayman and this still remains a top priority for us,” Mr Murphy said. “With the addition of the international distance event we hope that many more people from our triathlon and fitness community will come out and become part of Mercuryman.”

“We’ve added some children events on the Saturday to make it a weekend-long triathlon festival that can be enjoyed by the entire family.”

Mercuryman are also pleased to announce that the title sponsor for the 2017 Mercuryman will once again be Generali Worldwide.

“We are extremely honoured to be title sponsor for the Mercuryman triathlon for the third year in a row,” said Ms Karen Ebanks, Marketing Manager at Generali Worldwide. “We look forward to January and hope that many of Cayman’s triathletes will accept the challenge and take part in the race.”

Mercuryman are currently seeking other sponsors to support the race and ensure its continued success.

“We encourage any potential sponsors to reach out and get involved,” Mr Murphy said. “The triathlon is a high-profile sporting event that attracts top athletes from around the world. It is a perfect opportunity for businesses to get their brand and values into the public eye and to support a good cause.”

The 2017 Generali Worldwide Mercuryman will host the following races at its weekend-long triathlon festival:

  • Children’s events: Tykes Dash (4 and under); Beach Run (5-8); 1 mile run (8+)
  • Half Iron Individual/Team: 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run
