Ronco Cayman has helped to sponsor Ngilai, an orphaned baby elephant in Kenya, through their charity initiative ‘Hand Up’.

Ronco sponsored Ngilai, whose name means ‘value’ in Malay, through the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the most successful orphaned elephant rescue and rehabilitation programme in the world. Ronco’s sponsorship ensured that Ngilai was able to be treated and cared for after falling into a well in early 2015.

Darrell Hines, Managing Director at Ronco, said that Daphne Sheldrick, founder of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, was the first conservationist he ever met. Years later, he is still inspired by her and her cause and said it was an easy decision to get involved with their elephant conservation efforts.

“These animals need our help and support,” he said. “By supporting them and supporting our environment, we support ourselves. I am honoured to have been involved with Ngilai’s recuperation and integration into the Sheldrick herds.”

Ngilai received many bruises and wounds during his fall into the well, and Ronco’s donation helped with his medical needs, as well as with associated food and shelter costs. Only three weeks old when he was found by local community members, Ngilai is now over a year old and thriving despite his tumultuous beginning.

“We will continue to help as much as we are able to in the future,” said Mr Hines. “I hope that Ronco can show Cayman that our reach as a country is great, and that we can touch the lives of many around the world with the simplest of acts.”

Ronco Cayman’s charity initiative ‘Hand Up’ was recently launched, but charity work done by Ronco and Mr Hines extends back many years.

Local charities benefitted by Ronco Cayman include the Cayman Heart Foundation, the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, One Dog at a Time, St. Baldrick’s Heroes for Hannah, The Pines, The National Council of Voluntary Organisations and the West Bay Sports Foundation.

Internationally, Ronco is involved with many organisations, including Children’s Helpers Worldwide, The Gallmann Memorial Foundation and Save the Elephants, among others.
