One of the world’s respected pathologists is encouraged by the work of a Caribbean hospital and its mission to make high quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all.
Dr. Vinay Kumar, a titan in medical education and co-author of some of the most widely cited literature on pathology, visited Health City Cayman Islands last month to witness firsthand the work his colleague Dr. Devi Shetty has started in the Caribbean.
“I have deep respect for the mission-driven philosophy of Health City Cayman Islands and feel privileged to have seen it,” said Dr. Kumar of his visit to the Joint Commission International-accredited tertiary care facility.
“In my own small way, I am trying to achieve the same for medical education and I do hope that we can work together to improve healthcare globally,” he noted.
The medical professional, who currently serves as the Alice Hogge and Arthur Baer Distinguished Service Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pathology at the University of Chicago, started his career in India, where he was awarded the Pfizer gold medal for being the best medical graduate at Punjab University.
After completing his medical degree, he taught at various universities in the United States, including tenures at Boston University and the University of Texas Southwestern. He has served on the faculty of the University of Chicago since 2000.
Dr. Kumar said he had been traveling to Grand Cayman for years, but this year he returned to Chicago not just relaxed but also fulfilled.
Dr. Chandy Abraham, Director of Medical Services at Health City, said it was an honor to have a man of such intellect and repute walking the hallways of Health City. “Dr. Kumar travels extensively around the world to promote medical education reform, emphasizing the importance of basic sciences in medicine. His knowledge, experience and passion for medicine is an inspiration to all and we look forward to working with him in the future.”
Dr. Kumar’s research has been focused on the cellular and molecular biology of natural killer cells which has led to clinical trials for cancer treatment.
He has more than 170 peer reviewed publications in major medical journals, with one recent paper being recognised as the “Pillar of Immunology”.
He co-authored the widely used and influential texts “Pathologic Basis of Disease” and “Basic Pathology”, and his teaching awards include the Cancer Research Scholar Award from the American Cancer Society and honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in London.
