Cayman’s athletes will soon be gearing up for one of the most gruelling athletic events in the 2016 sporting calendar, Off The Beaten Track (OTBT) – set to take place on Sunday February 21st, 2016.
Off The Beaten Track is an annual charitable 50KM ultra-marathon designed to emulate the Marathon des Sables. It leads participants on an un-chartered route through tropical bush, sandy beaches and the back roads of Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands.
With registration now open, this one of-a-kind marathon experience offers two challenging options:
- For the seasoned individual runner, there is the opportunity to tackle this 50 kilometre cross-country course as a soloist.
- Relay teams of 6 can also participate running on average 8.5 kilometres each.
Entry to the race costs USD $300 for a relay team and USD$100 for individuals, however currently participants can benefit from significantly reduced rates up until January 7th 2016.
Off The Beaten Track annually supports an international charity, Facing Africa and a local charity, Meals on Wheels. Facing Africa is an established charity dedicated to helping children in Nigeria and Ethiopia affected by NOMA, a deathly infection affecting the face. With an average mortality rate of 90%, this curable disease is suffered primarily by children under the age of six caught in a vicious cycle of extreme poverty. The local charity, Meals on Wheels operates under the vision that no senior citizen in the Cayman Islands will go hungry or experience social isolation.
OTBT Race Director and Marketing Manager at KRyS Global, Anna Keating, said the race is an important community event: “Both charities resonate with our mission by supporting disenfranchised and vulnerable individuals who have not had the opportunities to have access to what we usually take for granted. We hope the money raised from Off The Beaten Track will enhance the lives of individuals, both at home and away.”
Established in 2010 by KRyS Global Founder and ultra-marathon runner, Kenneth Krys , Off The Beaten Track continues to maintain its adrenaline-charged reputation in Grand Cayman. He explains, “From humble beginnings Off The Beaten Track has become one of the premier running events in Cayman.
